The two claims, the Alabama and the Gold Hill were located in 1875. The mine was developed from two open cuts; 200 x 300 ft and 75 x 100 ft. The deepest reached 75 ft. Ore was drawn from the cuts through a glory hole and trammed through an adit to the mill. Initially this was a 10 stamp mill, which was reported to have produced $110,000 from $5 per ton gold ore. This mill was replaced by an electric 60-stamp mill in 1902. In 1904 the Big Indian mine was the biggest producer in Jefferson County. Between 1902 and 1904 the mine produced 14,808 tons of ore which yielded 4,456 ounces of gold. In total the mine made $60,000 from ore valued at $5 per ton. The mine apparently shut down shortly after 1904.]
